How To Stay On Track During The Holidays
If you ask 10 different trainers their opinions on “staying on track” during the holiday season…
You’ll probably get 10 different answers.
Some might tell you to just enjoy the holidays.
And to not worry about nutrition, exercise, or fitness at all.
While some might tell you to workout and track every meal every day around the holidays.
And to track your holiday dinners on MyFitnessPal.
So as the holidays are fast approaching, I wanted to give you my personal advice.
Here is a brief article on…
How To Stay On Track During The Holidays
I’m sure it’ll come as a complete surprise.
But I’m not a proponent of either…
Saying ‘fuck it’ for the entire holiday season
Obsessing so much that you don't enjoy the holiday season
My approach is more of a ‘middle ground’.
The holidays (whatever you celebrate) are about being with family and friends and having a good time.
And, for some people, logging your meals and spending every day in the gym takes away from that.
I for one, will not be tracking Christmas dinner (or New Years for that matter).
However, it's important to remember…
Christmas and New Years are 2 days.
I’ll give you 4 days counting Christmas Eve and New Years Eve.
4 days will NOT make or break your progress.
When someone puts on 10 pounds around the holidays, it is no the result of 4 days where you enjoyed yourself (as you should btw).
When someone puts on 10 pounds around the holidays, it is (most likely) the result of saying ‘fuck it’ for the entire month of December.
Now this, I do not recommend.
This is a great way to wake up on January 2nd having taken a few steps in the WRONG direction.
And, even though that month of saying ‘fuck it’ might feel good in the moment…
That won't feel good on January 2nd.
And I can almost guarantee you that it won't be worth it.
However, if you focus on staying on track as best you can in the days SURROUNDING the holidays.
And then enjoy the 2-4 days that are the actual holidays.
This applies to both nutrition and exercise btw…
You don't need to be in the gym Christmas morning to maintain all of your hard-earned progress.
But taking a month off from the gym could be detrimental.
And, I’m sure this will come as a surprise coming from me (he says with sarcasm)…
But steps are going to be a huge weapon to keep in your arsenal around the holidays.
Gyms closed?
Get some steps in.
Only have 30 minutes before family gets into town?
Get some steps in.
Kids napping?
Get some steps in.
Need a break from eating and drinking everything in sight?
GO GET SOME STEPS IN!!
Getting your steps in this time of year will be SUPER beneficial to…
keep you active
maintain progress
limit cravings
not feel like shit!
And just because you can’t go on a 30 minute walk doesn’t mean you shouldn’t go on one at all.
A little bit of something is better than a whole lot of nothing.
So, to conclude, to stay on track during the holidays (while still ENJOYING the holidays)…
Enjoy the actual holiday-days
Focus on staying on track as best you can on the days AROUND the holidays
Get your steps in
DON’T say ‘fuck it’ for the entire month
Do these 4 things…
You’re going to be happy with where you’re at come January 2nd.
And you’ll start 2023 off on a great foot.
