Fitness Goals - How To Stay On Top Of Your Health And Fitness Goals In 2023

Been a few weeks since I last published an article…

I took a little bit of a hiatus around the holidays and I’ve been pretty busy planning for a HUGE sale I’m doing on my 1-on-1 online coaching program launching tomorrow.

But I'm back on it this week!

It’s the beginning of 2023…

So it’s the time of year to set out and map out your fitness goals for the year.

You might be looking to…

  • lose fat/lose weight

  • build muscle/get stronger

  • improve nutrition/relationship with food

  • feel and look better

All of which are AWESOME goals to have.

But, as you may have heard before, not everyone achieves their goals for the New Year.

As a matter of fact, a lot of people end up not achieving their New Year's Resolutions, specifically with regards to health and fitness.

So, in this article, I'm going to outline my 5 keys for staying on top of your health and fitness goals this year.

Here they are…

1 - Write them down

This might sound like it’s way too simple to actually work, but it does.

Keeping your goals in your head is NOT an effective strategy.

Multiple studies have shown that writing your goals down, you are MUCH more likely to actually achieve your goals.

By keeping your goals in your head, you are making little to no commitment to your goals.

Simply by writing your goals down (yes on a piece of paper) you are making a commitment to those goals.

While simply writing your goals won't automatically make you achieve them, it will certainly help you commit to AND stay on top of them in 2023.

2 - Tell a friend (or family member)

This is very similar to number one.

But it’s pretty easy to tell ourselves a goal and not follow through with it.

After all, we’re the only ones who know about it… right?

When you tell only yourself a goal, in most cases, you aren’t making a full commitment to that goal.

However, when you tell that goal to someone else…

(Whether it’s a friend or family member, it doesn’t matter as long as it's someone who you may see again sometime down the line)

You make a COMMITMENT to that goal.

It’s easy to give up on a goal that you only told yourself.

But one you told someone else? Not so easy.

Simply by sharing your goal with another person, specifically a friend or family member, you are making a larger commitment to that goal.

And you are MUCH more likely to achieve it.

3 - Make your goals both objective AND action based

This strategy is SUPER underrated.

Most of us navigate towards objective based goals.

This is where the goal is based around a specific goal objective.

And objective based goals are great!

HOWEVER

You need ACTION based goals to accompany these objective based goals.

You need a few objective based goals, and then you need a few action based goals that are going to help you get there.

For example…

An objective based goal, would be to lose 5-10 pounds of fat in the first 3 months of 2023.

A few action based goals geared towards that objective would be…

  • get 5,000-10,000 steps daily for the first 3 months of 2023

  • eat X calories 80% of the time for the first 3 months of 2023

  • strength train 3 days per week for the first 3 months of 2023

  • eat X grams of protein for the first 3 months of 2023

Now, to clarify, both types of goals are extremely important.

And both play a huge role in achieving your goals.

But objective based goals alone won't get the job done.

You need to have an objective based goal, and action based goals to help you get there.

4 - Set SMART Goals

Okay, this one might be a little triggering for anyone who recently took health class.

In case you don't understand that reference, health classes in high school typically consist of a gym teacher yelling at you to set SMART goals.

But the acronym actually does work guys, I promise.

The SMART goal acronym is as follows…

S - Specific

M - Measurable

A - Attainable

R - Relevant

T - Timely

Now I'm not going to spend a ton of time diving into each individual letter here, that’s what high school health class is for.

However, don't forget about setting SMART goals when you set your health and fitness goals.

Your goals should be specific, they shouldn’t be super general and unclear.

Your goals should be measurable, you should be able to track your progress with your specific goal.

Your goals should be attainable, you shouldn’t expect to get a 6-pack in 5 weeks.

Your goals should be relevant, your goal should relate to your daily life.

And finally, your goal should be time based. You’ve heard me say that progress takes time (and trust me it does) but put a realistic time component with your health and fitness goals!

5 - Hire a coach

And last but not least, hire a coach.

Now, I’m not ignorant to my inherent bias with this one.

I am a fitness coach who helps people lose fat/lose weight, build muscle/strength, and improve nutrition…

But the value of a coach is EXTREMELY underrated.

For everything I need help with, I hire a coach.

To be transparent, I have a coach who helps me with my business.

Currently, my business is my priority and for that reason, I hired a coach to help me grow my business and help more people.

And your health and fitness goals are no different!!!

I'm not saying to work with me necessarily.

Find a coach that you relate to and work with them!

In all honesty though, if you don't relate to me and STILL have read to this point of the article I’d be shocked lol.

But you will gain a TON of value and accountability by hiring a coach who will…

  • take the guesswork out of your training and nutrition

  • create a plan to work with YOUR schedule/goals/lifestyle/etc.

  • keep you motivated and on track

  • be there for you every step of the way

  • help you CRUSH your goals in 2023!!

So, there are my 5 keys for staying on top of your health and fitness goals this year.

Follow these 5 keys, and you will CRUSH your health and fitness goals in 2023.
